Tie-Down Points & Load Restraint
An unsecured or overhanging load is one of the most common reasons trailers are pulled over — and the rules differ depending on whether the load is solid or loose material.
Tie-Down / Lashing Points
Rated anchor points (D-rings, lashing rails, or welded loops) fixed to the chassis or sides, used with ratchet straps or rope to hold solid items — furniture, machinery, palletised goods — against the trailer bed. The core principle of load restraint is that the restraint system must be able to withstand forces well beyond normal driving: sudden braking can generate forward force close to the load's own weight, so tie-downs rated only to "hold" a stationary load are not sufficient for transit.
Solid Loads
Solid or rigid items (furniture, whitegoods, machinery, building materials) need direct restraint — strapped or chained to rated tie-down points, positioned low and forward in the trailer where practical to keep the centre of gravity low and reduce sway. Multiple straps at different angles restrain a load more effectively than one strap alone, since a single strap only resists force along its own line of pull.
Loose / Bulk Loads
Loose material — soil, mulch, sand, gravel, green waste — is contained by the trailer's sides rather than individually strapped, but still needs active management: loads should sit below the top of the sides (not mounded above them) and be covered with a tarp or net where fine or light material could blow out in transit, which is both a safety and a legal requirement on public roads.
Load Projection Limits
Loads must not project more than 150mm beyond the trailer's sides, and the overall loaded width must not exceed 2.5m. Where a load projects more than 1.2m beyond the rear of the trailer, a red flag (minimum 300mm square) must be attached to the end of the load to make the overhang visible to following traffic.
